Fix Cyberpunk Mod Crashes
Fix Cyberpunk 2077 Flatline crashes after Patch 2.5. Learn how to read crash logs, remove conflicting version.dll files, and clean install frameworks.
Updated on
For a Cyberpunk flatlined crash after modding, back up your saves and temporarily move suspect mod files out of the game directory. Test a clean launch, then restore supported frameworks and mods one at a time. Check author release notes for your exact patch before reinstalling.
Back up
Copy saves and keep the original mod archives.
Isolate
Move suspect mod files aside and test a clean launch.
Restore gradually
Add a supported framework, launch, then add one mod at a time.
If a clean launch still fails, verify game files and check the crash logs before restoring mods.
Whenever Cyberpunk 2077 receives a major update, game memory addresses and engine hooks shift. Some older mod loaders may fail before the main menu appears. Use this Cyberpunk flatlined crash fix checklist to isolate and remove the culprit.
Isolate loaders first
Back up saves and keep a record of installed files before testing whether mod files are involved:
Isolate mod loaders
- Open your game root folder and navigate to:
Cyberpunk 2077\bin\x64\ - Locate the file named
version.dlland rename it toversion.dll.bak. - Locate the
pluginsfolder insidebin\x64\and rename it toplugins.bak.
This isolates CET files only. RED4ext and other mods may still be present. For a fully unmodded test, use your installed-file records and the RED4ext uninstall reference to move that release’s loader and mod-added files aside. Do not remove unrelated game files.
Check the result
Launch the game directly via Cyberpunk2077.exe.
- If the game launches normally: The disabled files are a likely cause. Proceed to the Framework Reinstall section below.
- If the game still crashes: The crash needs more investigation; remaining mods, game files, drivers or other causes may be involved. Verify game file integrity through Steam or GOG, and update your Nvidia/AMD graphics drivers.
Check the installed files
When Patch 2.5 dropped in October 2026, it overhauled the Cool perk tree and added native mod.io menus. Use the author’s installation file list to identify files that belong to your installed mod release:
| Problem File / Folder | Location | How to Fix |
|---|---|---|
version.dll (Legacy CET) | bin/x64/ | Move aside; install the CET release for your patch |
| RED4ext loader / plugins | See the installed release file list | Follow RED4ext’s current installation instructions |
r6/scripts/ (Pre-2.0 Redscripts) | r6/scripts/ | Back up and move mod-added scripts aside |
Read logs for clues
Cyberpunk 2077 writes detailed crash reports. To pinpoint the exact file causing the failure:
-
Press
Win + Ron your keyboard to open the Run dialog. -
Paste the following path and press Enter:
%localappdata%\REDEngine\ReportQueue\ -
Open the folder with the most recent timestamp.
-
Open
stacktrace.txtin Notepad. The report location follows CDPR’s crash-report instructions. -
Search for the word
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. Look for mod or DLL names in the surrounding stack trace. A name is a clue, not proof of the root cause; compare it with the relevant framework logs.
Recover a clean installation
If several mods conflict and you want a fresh start without losing your character progression:
- Back up your saves and record your installed mods. Move the following mod files and folders to a backup folder outside the game directory:
Cyberpunk 2077/bin/x64/plugins/Cyberpunk 2077/bin/x64/version.dllCyberpunk 2077/r6/scripts/Cyberpunk 2077/mods/Cyberpunk 2077/archive/pc/mod/
- Use the mod manager or each author’s installed-file list to isolate any remaining native loaders or mod files. Verification alone does not remove extra mod files.
- Open Steam or GOG and click Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Your save files are stored safely in
%userprofile%\Saved Games\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077\and will not be touched by the verification process.
Match the symptom
- Crash before the main menu: inspect loader logs and isolate mod-added DLLs using the release file list.
- Menu works but a mod is missing: check dependencies, archive placement and whether the mod is enabled.
- Only one save fails: preserve it, test a clean save, and check whether required content was removed.
- Clean game still fails: verify game files and follow CDPR technical support.
A log entry is a clue, not a guaranteed diagnosis. For native plugin setup, use the RED4ext installation reference. Editorial source review: 26 October 2026; no fabricated crash log or test result is presented.
